Dry January…..how about a day at a time?

A day at a time is really where it’s at for sobriety.

Went to an AA meeting last night. Nobody mentioned the annual Dry January fad currently all over the media, but we did applaud for staying sober the last 24 hours. Now there’s a concept!

After booze corporations spend billions in advertising on corporate media outlets to get Americans to spend billions boozing it up for the holiday season, we now get the Dry January concept rolled out once again before corporations once again spend billions to get us to spend billions on booze for the summer booze binge season. What a circus.

One TV network this morning did a full report on Dry January, presenting screens full of tips how to get and stay sober, the benefits of sobriety, even a few people who are doing Dry January and one woman who has stretched one month of sobriety into several years of sobriety. Congrats. That’s a good start. No one mentioned, however, getting involved in a ‘support group’ (AA), but I’m not sure they need to. Most people know about AA. Perhaps the TV station was honoring AA’s tradition of ‘attraction rather than promotion’ ?

So, after the Dry January flash in the pan fad fades, we’ll be here, offering meetings, real help to stay sober day after day and handing out sobriety birthday medallions to those who had the courage to admit they have a problem and to ask for help to deal with it…one day at a time.
